“An old man with enormous wings”, is a wonderful fantasy story by Garcia Marquez, which he described as a tale for children. However, it is a tale for children because of the fantasy and magic in it. Nevertheless, it is also a story for adults because of the way author present reality in it. The story is a combination of reality and fantasy which reflect many aspect of society. The story main focus is to lead readers understand that every living creature is an alms of god and should treated equally. Author used very compressive vocabulary and imagery language to plot the story which barely makes it a tale for children. The story left readers with many question and moral lesson which makes it a story for adult and a fantasy tale for children. The moral lesson in this story teaches adults to being human.
. Marquez, while raising different level of humanity, raised a question about the qualification of being human. The Synonyms of humanity are sympathy, tenderness, and goodwill, while Antonyms include inhumanity and unkindness. People in this story lack the qualification for being a human but scored higher on the opposite level of humanity. Author shed a light over the different component of humanity which deals with daily life activities. Human beings are so concerned about their own benefit that they even forget to own favor. Pelayo, a character in tale was first to notice the presence of old man. Lack of humanity, respect, and care towards old man made him to try to kill him still did not have the courage to kill somebody. After knowing that his presence cured his son illness, they reflect meager cared toward him, which give them another idea to make him circus animal. He used old man for his benefit and never returned his favor. With the help of money he created a big mansion and his wife brought jewelry and clothes for herself. He treated an old man exactly like a crabs while showing no respect at all. He created iron bars to avoid old man and high net to avoid crabs. “The chicken coop was the only thing that did not receive any attention (273). Chicken coop did not receive any attention because it was a place for hen and old man. Town people did not care about angel either that much because they had doubt of being him as an angel. Nobody has ever seen any angle but still people believe that they suppose to be young, beautiful feather, and clothes. Nevertheless, old man lacked the qualification for being an angle; he was just a human with wings. As other fantasy story, author did not directly present old man as an angel, instead he described him as an old man with wings.
The author presents the reaction of people towards individual who is different than the majority of people. The town people attitude towards innocence and helpless creature reflects that being different can raise several question for individual. Old man’s odd appearance made him a circus animal for town people instead of a “divine messenger”. Town people spent their time to figure out how much he relate to an angle by making judgment about his appearance. He was obviously an angel for Pelayo because his presence cured his child and decreases his poverty. Nevertheless, Pelayo never returned the favor of an old man. The lack of respect toward old man reflects another part of humanity. Nobody in the whole town try to figure out the reason of old man’s condition and his pain. All they were concerned about making judgment and drawing conclusion about his appearance. They burned their feathers and did not even try to console him when he stayed motionless because of fever. The old man who brought happiness in Pelayo life suffered from physical and emotional pain but nobody took care of him. Observer of the event tortured him instead of helping and appreciating his unique presence.
Author emphasizes great detail about humanity which raised a question about who is real human in the story. The definition of human has been changed throughout the life but still human has been considering different from animals. A human is better than animals because he has moral values, brain to think, and emotion to reflect care and love. Everybody in the tale lost the qualification for being a human but an old man. He is the real human being in the story who reflected patience, cared for town people, did not try to hurt them, and helped his owner to get rid of poverty. “His only supernatural virtue seemed to be patience”. The old man patience was obviously in this story makes him not to be less than any angle. Town people played many games to find out if he was an angel or not. They put him in the chicken coop where hens treated him cruelty, threw stone at him and burn his wings to see if he was an angel or not. Nevertheless, town people were failed to understand that his patience and calmness reflect him as an angel. Town people were full of superstitious which make them believe that old man is devil because of his odd appearance. People in the town just wanted entertainment because after the presence of spider girl, they reflect more interest in her story and avoid angel. They seemed to also influence by the story of spider girl, who sneak out of her house without parent permission and suffered form thunderstorm which turned her to spider girl. “The old man was the one who did not ……..”(273). Old man’s presence in the story reflects the behavior and attitude of human toward inhuman creature. He did not participate in the story directly, but his presence raised many question about humanity.
This is a tale for children just because of the fantasy and magic in it. Nevertheless, this tale also Teaches many aspect of humanity which human are losing throughout the historical period. The main focus of the tale is to make readers curious about what is humanity. This tale raised many question about the humanity which wants an answer form human being. Cruelty, selfishness, and racism are taking place over society while avoiding that every living creature feels pain and has many common aspect of life.
